Towards a Syntactic Understanding of Prosodically Reduced Pronouns
نویسنده
چکیده
Prosodically reduced pronouns come in two forms, “weak” and “clitic,” both differing from non-reduced “strong” pronouns. Both of these also occur in Westgermanic dialects and exhibit different properties which cannot always be unambiguously disentangled. The theoretical framework presented here allows us a straightforward disambiguation: reduced pronominal elements in the left periphery must be clitics, while those below cannot. The functional head F, encoding “point-of-view,” serves as the licensing position for clitics which are here taken to be heads; weak pronouns, maximal phrases in the overt syntax, cliticize at LF. Movement to F is driven by the need to compensate for underspecified φ-feature information.

Weak Function Word Shift
The fact that object shift only affects weak pronouns in mainland Scandinavian is seen as an instance of a more general observation that can be made in all Germanic languages: weak function words tend to avoid the edges of larger prosodic domains. This generalisation has been formulated within Optimality Theory in terms of alignment constraints on prosodic structure by Selkirk (1996) in explain...
متن کاملChange in Prosody as an Alternative: Evidence from Acquisition
This study contributes to the issue of syntax-prosody-semantics interaction in child speech. It focuses on the prosodic realization of contextually-defined direct objects in a language allowing object scrambling. The empirical data are collected from 3-4-year-old children acquiring Ukrainian. The children’s speech samples were analyzed in order to find contrast between the prosody of sentences ...
متن کاملHarmonic Alignment and the Hierarchy of Pronouns in German
The phonological feature [±stress] distinguishes between strong pronouns (which are capitalized here and henceforth) and others. The semantic feature [±animate] distinguishes between what I call unstressed pronouns and weak pronouns (cf. Cardinaletti & Starke (1996)). The phonological feature [±reduced] distinguishes between weak pronouns and reduced pronouns; the only reduced pronoun in Standa...
متن کاملReferent resolution for zero pronouns in Thai
1. Introduction Resolving zero pronouns is a major problem in developing a natural language understanding (NLU) system for Thai. Since subject and object pronouns in Thai can be omitted from a sentence, an NLU system must be capable of identifying the missing subjects or objects in the sentence. This process of identifying referents for zero pronouns, which is a part of referent resolution 1 pr...
متن کاملThe Syntax–Prosody Interface in Lexical Functional Grammar
This thesis develops a new approach to the syntax–prosody interface and establishes the integration of the phonological module into Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG). LFG is a modular grammar theory, which (among other questions) is interested in the relation between form and meaning, i.e., between what is said/perceived and what is intended/understood. An important factor with respect to this q...
